Becoming like Christ should be the main purpose of christian life and rest all effort is to support this purpose.
How that works?
- First stage is to come to Christ,
- Second stage is to commit to Christ,
- Third Stage is to work to be like Christ.
How to become like Christ?
The word agápe means self sacrifice and more similar meaning comes out and this is not normal word in greek language as paul bought up for specific purpose and in same agápe means love. For all that we need some discipline and commitment to meet that excellency. In fact the word Virtue (Arete) means excellence, where some thing was defined by its Purpose (Telus), for example if we use knife to cut meat or vegetables then that is its excellence but if it is kept in museum or in shelf for display of its beauty then it is not showing its excellence by its outward look as it is not fulfilling its purpose.
So what is the purpose of Christian?
1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Note: Chosen generation refers to regenerated people not some one God elected irrespective of there faith, but one who chooses Christ as saviour from there free will which they obtain from God when man was created in God’s image refer book of Genesis.
belivers purpose is to show excellency of Jesus Christ (only goal of Christians). So we are not some part of body that stop growing but an compulsion to keep growing (by producing spiritual fruits), our goal is to keep following and obeying Bible (word of God) to keep growing which meant to spend time with God through study and understanding. To keep growing we need to make mind to obey and be like christ which is doing again and again which is cultivating the ability to show and be the excellence of Christ. We see in Matthew 11:28 where Jesus stops and walks to blind men to give sight/light and how are our ways are we going out to give light to our surrounding world? we must understand the ways of Christ.
Jimberg’s Faith council ministry (I heard and agreed at this video which was presented at bible study), more depths can be gained by Jay Adam’s books too.
