Christian Festivals Christianity

#1

It has been practice around the world to celebrate Christmas, Good Friday and Easter as for some it has become religious festival, for some holiday seasons and so on… So the question arises among believers how do we need to look into these occasions? The first truthful understanding to be considered that salvation or christian-life is not merited on celebrating any of these festivals nor lost by rejecting them, but it is an opportunity to speak of gospel to the people on other end (unbelievers) as people tend to be more open to the gospel during the those holidays.

Scripture doesn’t specifically command believers to celebrate Christmas not there are any prescribed Holy Days but we should take advantage of that openness to witness to others of the saving gospel of God through Jesus Christ.

Christmas was not observed as a holiday until well after the biblical era. It wasn’t until the mid-fifth century that Christmas received any official recognition. – by John MacArthur
Paul emphasises on the same theme saying,

One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks (Rom. 14: 5-6).
So we set aside a day for lord and remember those days as reminders of great truths of Christs love showed to us (1 Corinthians 11:25; 2 Peter 1:12-15; 2 Thessalonians 2:5).

Truth needs repetition because we so easily forget it. We should celebrate these Christian festivals as remembrance and share truth with friends, family and neighbours.

John MacArthur puts in this way,

Although our society has muddied the message of Christmas through consumerism, myths and empty traditions, we should not let these distract us from appreciating the real meaning of Christmas. Let us take advantage of this opportunity to remember Him, worship Him and faithfully witness of Him.

As spreading gospel is not restricted only on special days but needs to take advantages of all possible occasions in our day to day life.
